Please post any questions you have about IRC in this thread. Thanks!

The Southperry IRC is hosted on GameSurge. To register for an account on GameSurge, click on "Southperry IRC" in the navbar above, then click on "Create an Account".

Connect to:

irc.gamesurge.net (default port 6667)
#southperry

To authenticate with AuthServ:

/as identify USERNAME PASSWORD

Also, GameSurge does not auto +x when you authenticate by default. To make +x the default option, use the following command:

/as set autofake 1

Ops tend to be those who are already moderators on SP.net (though not always). Voiced users are those who are donors on SP.net.

Feel free to ask me or any of the operators any questions you may have about being on the IRC network. Overall, we are a very loose bunch and most of the time it's "anything goes". Much of the time we don't even talk about Maplestory, but whatever seems interesting. We tend to be more active around 6 PM to midnight eastern time. We look forward to seeing you in IRC!

What is an IRC?
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. An IRC network comprises of thousands of chat rooms ranging from hundreds of subjects. The IRC network that Southperry uses is GameSurge which is an IRC network that's been around for over ten years and focuses on gaming chatrooms.

How do I connect to the chatroom?
First you need to download a client so you can connect to the server. Fiel use's XChat, so that would be what he recommends you download. You can download XChat here (http://xchat.org/download/).

While that's downloading, you need to register for an account with GameSurge. For that, click on the "Southperry IRC" dropdown menu in the navbar above, then click on "Create an Account". Create an account with GameSurge. It's best if you keep the nickname you create with GameSurge to be the same or close to your account name on Southperry.

After you've registered with GameSurge, install XChat. Then run XChat. You will see a window which will ask you for your nickname. Choose a nickname (keep in mind you might not always get the nickname you want!). For your Real name, it's suggested that you don't actually put your real name there, but keep it the same name as your nickname.

On the right side of the same window, click on "Add". Type in "GameSurge" and press enter. With "GameSurge" selected, click on Edit on the right side of the window. In the top right portion of the window that appears, click on "Edit". Change the textbox to "irc.gamesurge.net/6667". Click "Close". Then click on "GameSurge", and then click on "Connect".

Eventually, a window called "XChat: Connection Complete" will show up. Select the second radio button ("Join this channel"). Make the text box contain "#southperry". Then click on OK. You will now connect to the Southperry IRC channel.

Authenticating
Of course, we want to make sure that we're talking with you and that we know that we're talking to you, so you need to authenticate with GameSurge's Authentication Server, called AuthServ.

In the left part of the XChat window, you will see the word "GameSurge" above the word "Southperry". Click on GameSurge. You'll know you clicked on the right thing if the contents of the window changed. This is where you submit commands to AuthServ. Submit the following command:

/msg authserv identify YOUR_USERNAME YOUR_PASSWORD

Or, if you want, you can use some shorthand notation to do the same thing:

/as identify YOUR_USERNAME YOUR_PASSWORD

Your IP Address
By default when you join a channel, your IP address will be displayed publically. It looks like this:

Googlemesh (~Googlemesh@adsl-76-230-237-203.dsl.pltn13.sbcglobal.net) has joined #southperry

If you want to hide your IP address, that's simple enough to do. While still in the GameSurge screen, submit the following command:

/msg authserv set autofake 1

Or:

/as set autofake 1

This will hide your IP address after you authenticate.

How to start chatting

Click on "#southperry" in the left part of the window, and then, just like in any other chatting program, type your message into the bottom and press enter to submit your message.

If you need help

There are plenty of places to go if you need help with connecting to GameSurge or if you need help with chatting or connecting to the channel. Please contact one of the following people:

Channel Co-Owner: GameMX

Mibbit is an alternate IRC client program that runs straight from your browser window, so you will not need to download anything before connecting. To use our Mibbit widget, click on the "Southperry IRC" dropdown menu in the navbar, then click on "Mibbit". Choose a nickname, and you will automatically be connected to Southperry's channel.

Theres a field for the server (irc.gamesurge.net), port autos to 6667, and then I have #southperry set for the channel. It never connects fully to the gamesurge server. Also, ive tried using the "direct" link in the drop down as the server to connect to, but still no go.

Can you change the port? If so, try 6666.

Are there any other options for IRC clients? XChat is not free and I can't afford international transactions from where I am, mIRC doesn't look good enough to me but I'll use it if I have no other choice.

Since I'm not really bumping... just answering an older question, there IS an open sourced xchat that is available at http://code.google.com/p/xchat-wdk/. Works the exact same as XChat, just, free, nothing pirated about it.
