View Full Version : My mother's logic is infallible

My mom thinks I have a computer addiction. To solve this "problem" (my grades are all above 90, I go to a pretty good high school in NYC (Townsend), and I have friends), she decides that it's a great idea to get my dad to take my DS.

Yes. By taking my DS, she will somehow manage to break my "computer addiction"

This was like.. a year ago.

So this weekend, we're going to Boston. Anticipating a long car trip, I ask my dad for my DS and other stuff back, since I'm also missing my charger and a little game case thing that held 3 games (Elite Beat Agents, Pokemon Blue Mystery Dungeon, and Mario Kart DS)

Today, my dad came home with only the DS. The whole week, he's said that he never took my charger and game case thing. All three were in the same place - my sock drawer (lulz).

So after dinner, I ransacked my house trying to look for my charger (luckily, I have a car adapter thingy in case I don't find it, but.. >.>) and game case. I come up with nothing. My brother's also missing his Pokemon Ruby (which was Action Replayed to have all the pre-Sinnoh legendaries, and where I had all the starters, Johto starters, Kanto starters, Kanto + Johto Pokemanz, etc)

Then my mom basically starts yelling at me for searching the house at 10 at night, which gets me pissed off since it's because of her that I'm turning the house upside-down

Mood: Semi-depressed and irritated (and annoyed, and pissed off, and amazed at how awesome my mom's brain works, and blablabla)

(Yea, I can always go rebuy the games and charger if I really can't find them (which will probably set me back about.. 100 dollars or so..). But replaying them just doesn't have the same feeling as before (especially in Mystery Dungeon. Starting as Squirtle was awesome) (and there's no way I can ever re-obtain everything I had in Ruby ;_;)D;)

Well your mom wants to see you do something else but play your video games or computer game. I'm sure she's very aware of your grades & everything but she wants to see you active.(not just going out with friends, but like playing sports or something other than just sitting there, gaming away for hours on end)..not to sound harsh or get on your nerves or anything but that's how mom's and dad's are...

Eh, I'd say ignore them when it comes to this, if you have already explained you have a life, and you really do, then its rather pathetic that she is still complaining.

Personaly noone would ever get ahold of my DS, or Wii or computer, then again I'm almost 18 and my parents don't care so much, Bwahaha.

I used to have these same issues with my parents. They then let me play as much as I wanted, until I didn't go outside anymore. Eventually I myself decided I had computer addiction, and quit videogames, including Maple.

I know it's annoying to have your parents say stuff like this, but if you really think about it, games are nothing but a waste of time. Books teach you stuff and make you think, work gets you money, school improves a lot of skills, (inc. social skills with friends and members of the opposite sex.) Games... just keep you from doing those other things.

By that logic listening to music is also a waste of time.
Some really good video games are basically interactive novels, you can't just lump all of them into one category.

Uh... I've been playing video games, (mostly RPGs,) since I was 12. I quit video games at the age of 27. The only games I ever came across that had storylines that good were Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Suikoden I, and maybe Grandia. Even so, comparing any of these games to high-end literature is not really feasible. And considering how long I played, I think I could have gotten more information through reading. I love music, and I'd have to argue the type of enjoyment derived from music is different from video games, especially when you're talking about finer music.

Where did I compare them to high end literature?
I said that some really good video games are basically interactive novels, you can't just lump all of them into one category.

Now, music: I'd like to hear what you have to say on this. Please tell me why it's not a waste of time in your opinion. (Trust me, I'm going somewhere with this.) From what I can gather anything that does not teach you something or gets you money is not worth doing, regardless of enjoyment and or entertainment.

And where did I ask do you have to spend your time learning somthing 24/7?

Nothing wrong with games, but keep it under control, but then again, I dissagear with you

I'd really disagre, I'm 17 I've got ton's of freinds I've came closer playing games with! if it was not for playing games with them I would have never had them as my friend since we lack much the same interest!

Also let me do point out that my uncle got Marryed to the girl he played Mario Kart with every week from the time he was 15 till 25! now he's in collage and moving up in his life and yet he still finds the time to get some friends over and play some Wii! and no! he does not suck at them xD Also all the games you mentioned are RPG's they do have good storyline, but nowhere near a novel's! I'd say this, when I want a good story, one thats been worked on and has high detail my last thought would be to play a game for the story. But then again I have found some storys to be just as good as reading a good novel, aka Hotel Dusk.

My thoughts.

My parents do the same thing. :(

Yes, I do have a computer addiction. But I'm healthier than 90% of people, my parents included (such hypocrites), highest GPA in the school and I have plenty of friends. My dad complains I'm not social. What the hell? And my mom says I should be concentrating on doing something that will help me get a job. My resume is filled enough, thanks, and there are millions of computer-related jobs.

You sure she's worried about your grades?

My parents are more worried about my eyes
