View Full Version : So who here has heard of Opeth?
Opeth is a Swedish progressive death metal band that formed in 1990 in Stockholm. While the band has been through several personnel changes, singer, guitarist, and songwriter Mikael Åkerfeldt have remained as Opeth's driving force since joining shortly after its inception.
While firmly rooted in Scandinavian death metal, Opeth has consistently incorporated influence by progressive music, folk, blues rock and jazz into their usually lengthy songs. Many compositions include acoustic guitar parts and strong dynamic shifts, as well as both growling and clean vocals. Though they rarely toured in support of their first four albums, Opeth conducted their first world tour after the 2001 release of Blackwater Park.
Opeth has released nine studio albums, two live albums, one box set, and one DVD. The band released its debut album Orchid in 1995, but did not experience American commercial success until the 2003 release of seventh effort Damnation which debuted at #192 on the Billboard 200. Opeth's ninth studio album, Watershed, was released on June 3, 2008 and entered the Billboard 200 at #23. -Taken from their Wikipedia.
Basically, they're not for everyone. But I've been a Metal fan for quite a while and when I heard of them for the first time I fell in love. If you like Metal, you owe it to yourself to check them out. :]
They're a tad esoteric for my taste. I prefer grindcore/power/tech death. I'll give opeth a listen every now and then, though. :)

I am going to assume that GWAR is included in this "Death Metal" category.
Here is my story about this band. I am a girl who listen's to pretty much a whole spectrum of things... Pop, Rap, R&B, Rock. My friends were all going to this concert on Halloween a few years back and invited me to go. I had NO clue who they were or what they sang. So I accepted the offer to join them at the concert. I thought it would be a new experience and I would be with my friends.
I get there. I cried. I was scared. lol. The lyrics scared me, the blood comming into the audience scared me, they scared me. It was nothing what I had EVER experienced....EVER. Needless to say, I came home, threw up and went to bed, having nightmares.
Ew...I can assure you Opeth is nothing like GWAR. Most Opeth concerts are pretty calm and collective.
GWAR falls into the "Shit" category of Metal.

The faggot topic starter of this thread is the guy who introduced me to Opeth about a year ago. I've downloaded and listened to all of their stuff, and they're great. They do get old after a while though; I haven't listened to any Opeth for at least two months. :<

Nobody likes GWAR for the music, it's because the concerts are insane.

Opeth is like a heavier version of Porcupine Tree (who are prog rock rather than prog metal), I <3 them.
GWAR is god damn hilarious. <_<
Anyway, all I really know about Opeth is that their songs last like 15 minutes each. Never really bothered with it.
I love Opeth! I just love how they mix up Acoustic w/ Death. Blackwater Park is my favorite album by Opeth.

Man, progressive music is the way of the future. You can't discount a band because their songs are 10+ minutes long. You're missing out.

Ohoh, I see what's going on here. tiem2marsvolta.
Yeah they're good and all. Some of the songs I really need to be in the mood for, but most music is like that anyways.

Well, i know opeth for quite awhile and frankly, i think they're boring and overrated.
at first i fell in love with them like most but when i calmed down i realized that although their sound and genre are so unusual, their songs are all the same, they released a new album in 2008 if i remember correctly (or was it 2007?) and i thought they'll surprise me, but nope it sounded like every other opeth album (except Damnation, their best album IMO and the only one i still listen to).
yeah, u can say it about alot of other bands too, but i find myself always saying that on opeth.
btw, if u liked opeth so much i can recomend u an israeli band called Asgaut, my friends and i always call their genre "opeth metal" since they sound so much like opeth but they still dont enter the "extreme-prog metal" genre.

I've been listening to Opeth since the late '90s and they're still not boring to me. Maybe you just don't truly appreciate the Prog Death genre. :f3:

Opeth are awful o.o
all their songs sound far too similar for me to categorize them as anything progressive.
apparently if you throw irrelevant acoustic sections into your mediocre death metal, you're a genius.
