View Full Version : OMFG The Dark Knight.
June 30, 2008 - It isn't an overstatement to call The Dark Knight the most sophisticated and ambitious work of its kind. Superior to all three Spider-Man installments and even its amazing predecessor in terms of conceptualization, writing, acting, and direction, Nolan's follow-up to Batman Begins is a dark, complex and disturbing film, not the least of which because it grafts its heroics onto the blueprint of actual reality rather than that of spandex-clad supermen. And while such a distinction may make little difference to those already eagerly anticipating the return of the caped crusader, suffice it to say that The Dark Knight qualifies as the first official comic book adaptation that truly succeeds in being a great artistic achievement in its own right.
Christian Bale returns as Bruce Wayne, the billionaire playboy who moonlights as Batman. Having eased more comfortably into a lifestyle of excess, Wayne lurks on the fringes of his family's corporation as CEO Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) runs the boardroom. But when an ambitious district attorney named Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) comes forward to challenge Gotham City's villainy through proper legal channels, the man also known as Batman sees an opportunity to replace his vigilante persona with a figure of virtue who will truly inspire the best in the citizenry.
Unfortunately, Batman's success as a crime fighter has generated new problems for Gotham, including a consolidation of the crime lords who once controlled the city independently. Meanwhile, a new adversary named The Joker (Heath Ledger) proves particularly dangerous because he seeks not only to advance the cause of Gotham's underworld, but obliterate the foundations of liberty and order that Batman protects. Torn between championing Dent and meting out justice as a masked vigilante, Wayne soon finds himself at a crossroads between being the hero that Gotham needs and the one it deserves.

Yeah, from what little I've gathered he was halfway into shooting another movie when he died. Its apparently for kids so I'm interested to see how they handle finishing that film if not who his replacement will be.
As for the Dark Knight, I'm stoked. I hear great things from everyone and the recently mass released production photos are almost a flip book for the entire film along with all the damn trailer campaigns in the last couple months. Plus, there's all this buzz about his performance being good enough to be Oscar worthy.
Yeah, I heard Ledgar's performance as the Joker was the best yet. I have a feeling he'll be winning awards out of respect for being a good actor.

i work at a movie theater and can tell you that the higher ups have already told all the general managers to get ready because its supposed to be setting records for attendance if theyre predictions are correct, and i live in a fairly small town, but our theater (cinemark's tinseltown 14) is getting 4 copies of the movie, which has been unheard of since starwars/lotr/passion of the christ, we usually only get 3 of the mega popular movies, so in addition to the fact that i loved the batman cartoons/comics/the-last-movie, im deeply interested to watch this from a business perspective as well

The movie was perfect. Everyone did their character very well. Ledger does a brilliant Joker that tends to be more believable than even the one in the comics. They got Eckert to do Two-Face...I was not disappointed at all with this. The fact that they never show what Two-Face looks like in the trailers so you never see it until you actually see it in the movie...wow. Gary Oldman still does an impressive Gordon. Caine and Freeman hit their characters perfectly. Bale is still the best Batman I've seen. The story is well done. They don't stretch anything to make it work. It's not gimmicky like alot of the other movies...they make it more realistic than the others, and in many ways, thats a great thing with it.
My worry is...if they do a third, can they do it and keep in the realistic tones that it has? Who could they have? Poison Ivy would be somewhat difficult to do, Penguin is too gimmicky, same with Riddler. Maybe Mr. Freeze...but they'd have to do it properly...none of this Arnold Schwartzeneger shit...Mr Freeze was thin, weak, and frail. Still, I trust whatever they do, because my skepticism over Heath Ledger as Joker was completely destroyed when I saw this. They could say Rosie O'Donnell is playing the Penguin and I'd allow it.
Great film. Go see it. Purchase your tickets online, though, as most places will sell out fast.

Ok, you must not realize exactly how Batman really is and was meant to be. Batman Beyond was their attempt at pleasing the younger crowd like the original Batman: The Animated Series did. Sadly, it didn't come close in my mind. This Batman and Batman Begins are the TRUE Batman...the vengeful, dark, sadistic sides of him. The Joker was what he was truly meant to be...same with Two-Face. If you want the idea of the true Batman, read The Killing Joke.
I'd have been pissed if it was from Batman Beyond...the way they're doing alot of movies recently, this would just be another on that pile of shit. They're trying to please the masses instead of sticking to the original story (which, obviously, pleased the masses enough for them to want to make a movie) they make it into something that can be loved by everyone. This was the problem with Batman Forever and...ugh...Batman and Robin. They don't want to go back to that "friendly days of Batman" mindset. They wanted to present him as they truly is.

WandererWillow

He was meant to be a hero, but not in the same term as many consider heroes to be. He isn't the poster child for doing the right thing. He sure as hell wont be winning any recognitions for being a peace keeper. In many cases, he was just as psychotic, vengeful, and dark as the villians he faced. However, he still was the one that fought to protect what he loved, even if it meant stepping on a few toes...or breaking a few legs.
The only good thing that came from Batman Beyond was the first episode, where Batman picks up a gun, uses it and kills the attackers, and realizes he's just broken a promise he made to himself. For those that go see this movie and wonder what Joker means by his "rule", he refuses to kill anyone. He feels everyone deserves that chance to live. That ties into the "no guns" rule. He's vowed to never use a gun to kill someone, as it's dishonorable and cowardly. So, everything from then on in Batman Beyond was just..bad.

There was talks of a Batman Beyond film before Batman Begins was made.
It eventually went by the wayside in favor of an adaptation of Batman: Year One, which eventually came to be Batman Begins. I'm a fan of Beyond myself, but don't expect anything on it any time soon. It's basically limited to DCAU, and DCAU has been dead ever since JLU ended in '06. They could have brought back DCAU any time they wanted, but they decided to develop Superman Doomsday, Justice League: The New Frontier, Gotham Night, Wonder Woman, and a still-in-works Teen Titans film based on the Judas Contract arc. None of these recent DVD releases, or the ones in the works, are DCAU. If you were hoping to ever see Terry McGinnis ever again, I would tell you to go buy the DVDs and don't hold your breath. Not that a live action Batman Beyond would have been any good anyway.
I already posted about Dark Knight on another forum. I don't feel like typing my fanboyedness all over again, so I'll just post it as-is here, with some minor changes for formatting. There are spoilers laden throughout, so beware.
Just got back.
Excellent film super great would watch again.
Hopefully before much longer. Maybe mid-next week.
Incidentally, the batsuit was tasteful in almost every scene. The only scene I was alerted to the crappiness of it was when Bruce was looking at it in the case, a scene which has been in basically ever trailer ever. Not once during the actual action did I notice how much I hated what the suit looked like.
The "explanation" of the new suit wasn't an explanation at all. He's just like "i wanna turn my head lol gimme new suit 8)"
Overall, it didn't really feel like a typical movie like this. It almost felt like Batman was along for the ride of the whole action going on, rather than it being Batman-driven. Sort of like a story in his continuity
[in relation to someone commenting about a comparison between Jack Nicholson's Joker in Batman (1989) to Ledger's Joker here]
There were a few points that I really liked Nicholson's Joker. Actually I think that's just the climax of the film that he really shines. The only way Ledger's Joker could have been better though would be if it had more of a Hamill's Joker feel to the voice. Personality was pretty spot-on, particularly what he said to Batman towards the end of the film. I loved his explanations for his scars rofl
I am a bit disappointed Joker didn't allude to the idea that all it takes is "one really bad day", particularly since it's so obviously relevant here.
Also, I surprised myself. I thought I was going to be troubled by the fact that Joker actually wears makeup to look the way he does, but it worked very well.
Did anyone else who saw it get the feeling they struggled to get the PG13 rating? I'm really hoping they do an unrated cut when it hits DVD... A character as gruesome as this doesn't lend itself well to family fair.
ps stuff I missed somehow:
Bruce as the playboy was also so ****ing good. It was the funniest thing ever when he protected the truck by zooming forward with the Lamborghini. And Joker's **** was the PERFECT balance of insane-evil-funny. That's the sign of a good Joker: evil as hell and makes you laugh at really inappropriate times.
In general, great movie. Joker was best ever. Everything was great.
...from WHAT!?

I'm pretty sure that the majority of folks who appreciated the DCAU take on things, were satisfied with the direction Batman Beyond went. It was rather successful, and did win at least one Emmy I know of. Lasted for 3 seasons and one straight-to-video film. Not quite the 4 year run, with a disjointed 3 feature film release that the original series enjoyed, but certainly nothing to scoff at either. It is a different direction, yes, but that was the point from the beginning. It wasn't just "hey this is Batman in the future", it was "this is a new character taking on the mantle of Batman". The idea of the world always needing a Batman isn't exactly a unique idea, and having someone take up the identity in the future is a natural response to it, I would say. Also, I just love Will Friedle's voice, and his Terry McGinnis is one of the best voice works he has done. You may know him better as Eric on Boy Meets World though, see my avatar.

Lmao@newage batman spinoffs.
Not exactly. He's a vigilante, but the noble mindset has always been there. He is not a murderer, he is not a thief. He has a rigid set of rules; this in itself is why he becomes a target for many of the more insane members of his rogues gallery.

The movie was perfect.
It has some small issues but nothing that takes away from the film at all. The characters were great, especially Ledger's Joker which seemed to channeling the murderous clever psychopath of the classic Joker from the earlier days of the Joker comic book character.
The twists in the plot and the way the movie also analyzes hero and villain archetypes and what they mean was a great touch. It really gave some powerful energy to Harvey Dent's portion of the story as well as Joker's and Batman's leading to that awesome climax at the end with Two Face.
Another thing I'm loving is that this movie did well in portraying the Keysi fighting system much better then the first movie did. You actually see all the hammer fists and elbow strikes and arm and shoulder control moves though it disappointed me he ended most of the enemies with a simple punch.
Plus, it also gave us the gritty realism of reality with people getting hurt and at times dying in small moments. Nothing was over played in a dramatic fashion or not shown, it was all real and made you flinch.
I really hope this sets a precedent for the studios making the up coming comic book movies for both Marvel and DC and whatever others to do a good job and not settle for bare minimums and mediocre finished work anymore.
We want happy accidents and strong movie making with good acting, good writing, and good cinematography with touches of 3D and computer graphics if needed to enhance moments that can't be done with the previously mentioned things.
Marvel accomplished this with Iron Man bringing the strong leading man of Rodney Downey Jr into the role of Tony Stark which made the movie and the use of NURB based 3D modeling for the suit didn't ruin anything, it made the movie better. Also, the good acting by a majority of the cast only made the movie stronger.
Now with the Dark Knight the excellent acting skills of everyone on set plus the awesome special effects and special make up effects for Joker and Two face created a powerful comic book hero film. And like Downey Jr before him, Ledger really took this role and made it his own. Sadly, he took his method acting to a level that's dangerous and it partially added to his tragic death.
Here's hoping Watchmen can create for us a hat trick of strong acting and great move making.

This movie was amazing, what can I say. Heath Ledger - amazing. He did the role of the Joker perfectly and I don't think anyone else can fill the role. The way he acted was just so, perfect. I love the pencil trick, that was sick. Also the little things he did like the wine drinking, or just the way he talked made the movie that much more better. I want to see it again and again. :D
Another thing I'm loving is that this movie did well in portraying the Keysi fighting system much better then the first movie did. You actually see all the hammer fists and elbow strikes and arm and shoulder control moves though it disappointed me he ended most of the enemies with a simple punch.
Well its better than seeing "BAM!" and "POW!"
But I agree, the close camera action and darkness in the first movie didnt show enough of the close combat. It was definately an improvement
Here's hoping Watchmen can create for us a hat trick of strong acting and great move making.
It has Samuel L Jackson......it has to be awesome
I also read in a interview somewhere that Jack Nicholson was "insulted" that he wasn't contacted by Ledger. He expected Ledger to ask him how to portray the Joker, and be able to see its incarnaction first hand.
As good as Nicholson was, he needs to get over himself. American icon or not, the fact that he thought he was entitled to see the filming and be on set to give pointers....thats ridiculous.
O and this is from wikipedia, notes on the first Batman's "Joker" (the one with Michael Keaton)
Tim Curry, Willem Dafoe, David Bowie and James Woods were considered for the Joker. Jack Nicholson was Uslan's and Kane's choice since 1980. Peters approached Jack Nicholson as far back as 1986, during filming of The Witches of Eastwick. After he was cast, Nicholson immediately began making demands. He had what was known as an "off-the-clock" agreement. His contract specified the number of hours he was entitled to have off each day, from the time he left the set to the time he reported back for filming. Nicholson demanded to have all of his scenes shot in a three week block, but the schedule lapsed into 106 days. Nicholson also demanded that he receive top billing over all of the other actors. In addition to this, he wanted script rewrites and a $6 million salary, as well as a large percentage of the box office gross. The fee is reported to be as high as a $50 million
Honestly, I didnt know he was that greedy.....

They also really screwed up because they told Jack that they were going to give the role to Robin Williams, and even went as far as contacting him and giving him an offer, just to get Jack to sign on. When Robin's found out he was bait, he was apparently furious. When they offered him the role as the Riddler later on, he told them to go fuck themselves. Great stuff.

I would say that this is the BEST Harvey Dent portrayal I've seen yet, as well as a damn fine Two Face as well. Definitely ahead of the animated portrayal in my eyes for not just making him a bad guy, but instead making him out as a real person who was doing what he thought was right.

This movie is seriously the best I've watched this year. I actually enjoy some of the stunts the Joker pulled, like that ship trick, where the joker told each side to blow up the other or both die. I found amusement and interest in that. Although I'm really not that dark... given the chance, I'd probably want to attempt that as well. Hehe...
It's interesting how the convicts shows truly that they've had a change of heart when the one convict throws the detonator out of the window. It's also interesting how the civilians try to justify blowing up the convicts by saying "they've had their chance".
I think the movie portrays a person's true self very well.
The beginning was very funny as well. The Joker didn't even do anything, yet he walks away with all of the money. "I was told to kill you after you -----." LoL!

"If you're good at something, Never do it for free" Love that line xD
Ledger's Joker is one of the best, if not the best, joker ever played on the big screen. He encompassed the Joker's psycho path mindset quite well. It is sad that he won't be coming back =(
There are so many quotable moments in here it's not even funny. But i think There should be more Two Face =P
Oh the social experiments some people would do...
I believe that what they did for Two face at the end was a perfect "end" for the character, but the ending is kind of ambiguous. Did Two Face really die? What becomes of Batman's now hunted persona?
I guess i leave that for the next movie...
LOL at the Joker nurse part. I liked the little funny tid bit where he couldn't get the bomb to finish up

I really don't even have words to describe this movie. Heath Ledger played The Joker so amazingly, it's scary. I mean, I've seen a lot of movies but, he takes the cake as the best actor I've ever seen in a part. The part he played really was beautiful, and it's a horrible shame what happened to him.
On a side-note. I lulz'd at two parts.
Joker in the Nurse suit, I was dying. That was epic.
Also, when I heard Batman's voice for the first time. Definitely wasn't what I expected. XD
I saw this movie 3 times. Twice in a row and then again while my cousins went to go see Space Chimps or something. @__@ $16.50 well spent. I bought the soundtrack too. o.o
Worthyness:
IMDB had an article saying that Aaron Eckhart (Two-Face) signed on for the third movie so, he might not be dead

Saw it the other night. I wasn't too thrilled. The voice of Batman was pushed too hard and it just wasn't too great, imo.
Heath Ledger did pretty fuckin amazing as the Joker though. Favorite part of the movie was the pencil disappearing act.

Great job by Heath. Even the subtle things he does like licking his lips and clearing his throat just adds to the compulsive behavior of "Joker".

It was one of the best movies I've seen in awhile, they did one of the best jobs with the joker, and I really liked how Two Face played out!
Must see movie!

Best effing movie I've seen this year!..I don't like Christian Bale's voice in this one though, it sounded like he had something stuck in his throat:f6:. His voice was MUCH sexier in Batman Begins:heart:...Heath Ledger played the hell out of the Joker(it was sort of scary:f6:)..""Introduce a little anarchy...upset the established order...and everything becomes chaos. I’m an agent of chaos."
