View Full Version : Internet constantly disconnects ;(

Just as the title says, my internet is constantly disconnecting me, I've searched google for an hour but I still haven't found a solution so I've decided turn to the intelligent community of Southperry! I'd REALLY like to find out why it's doing this since it's really, really annoying. My internet just keeps dying whether it be once every hour, once every half a hour, once every few minutes, and more recently now, once every few seconds. Bottom line is that I can't ever get my internet to work through the entire day.

I've tried alternating between using a router and simply just using the modem but the results are pretty much the same.

First and foremost I'd just like to know whether this is my ISP's problem or if it's my computer's.

Speedtest.net results (When my internet is functional of course ;P):
http://www.speedtest.net/result/301928279.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

If it helps my router is Linksys WRT54G v3 (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1149562300349&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=0034939789B01) and my modem is Motorola Surfboard SB5120 (http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/sb5120/).

If you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer. (Provided my internet isn't down...)

Thanks for reading, I appreciate it. ;)

P.S. This has been happening for a few months or so, but it's recently just started to get really bad.
P.P.S When I'm using a router, it's not wireless.

How long are the disconnects?

I have the same brand modem and I have had the same type of problem where it would disconnect and come back on randomly. It could be due to low/high modem signals.

The disconnects ranges from around 20 seconds to 10 minutes although it doesn't usually disconnect for that long. Sigh, It didn't used to be like this. Everything was going so well a few months ago until this happened. I've had this ISP for years and this is the first time something like this ever happened. ;(

Thanks for replying.

Might be the a problem at the company itself. Might want to phone them and ask.

Well, I guess there's really no other solution. I'll phone them and get one of their technicians to come over. (Phone support sucks.)

Thanks for all the help everyone.

if it turns out to not be the ISP, try updating your Network Interface Cards Drivers.

Also wont hurt to renew your ip.

start>run>type "cmd" >hit enter.

type "ipconfig /release"
then type "ipconfig /renew"

May be that your nic is going bad and you may need a new one.

Good luck

Okay, I've just tried both of your solutions but to no avail.

Sigh, this is really causing me heaps of trouble. ;(

Thanks for your suggestions though.

When I had comcast that use to happen to me all the time. I had to literally harass them on the phone to get them to come out and fix the problem. Turns out all they needed to do was type in some stupid codes or something in the computer there.

I would be super persistent on calling them and getting them to come out. When I called Comcast, I would sit on the phone for hours trying to get a hold of people.

I'd talk with the ISP first. Harrass them if you want, but the best way to get them to work is if you threaten to move to another ISP. That always seems to work for me. I'm so good at it I managed to talk them into free internet for 4 months. Then I switched anyway. Yas, I'm a horrible person.

Might be errors within the modem. Might overheat.

Tried restarting your modem and router? Let them be at a cool place as well.

Mines actually being doing this A LOT lately. I have Verizon though, and we don't have the same modem. But I do know if I restart my computer or my modem, it works perfectly fine again for a while. @_________@;;

Haha, there's no need to harass our ISP. They're actually pretty nice and besides one of my mom's friend works there so it won't be much of a hassle getting someone on the phone.

Wow, free internet for 4 months? We're actually considering switching to Bell right now but because of different reasons. I personally don't want to switch over to Bell because I've heard that their internet speed is lightning slow.

I probably restarted my modem at LEAST 15 times, so yeah I don't think that's the problem. ;/

Technician is going to be coming over in 2/3 days time, I can't wait till then.

Once again, thanks for all your suggestion. ;)

My internet did the same thing, it'd randomly disconnect for 20 seconds to 60 seconds. Turns out one of their routers in the "data-center" or whatever the hell they call them was not fully functional. We kept telling it was their fault and not ours, but they didn't believe us until a technician came over and inspected our set-up and noticed no problems. It is much better now that we yelled at them D: ...

Other than my experience I don't think I can suggest anything...

I find it funny how most of the people in this thread likes yelling at their ISP. I'm way too nice to ever do that, there's always other ways to work things out. ;P

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Nah, you just have a very nice ISP. Most are complete jerks, and rarely, if ever, listen to their customers.
