View Full Version : When was the last time you seriously had fun playing MapleStory?

I've been wondering this for a while and as I see more and more people quitting global for numerous reasons, I'm interested in the general ideas of southperry.net. To have fun with the game, there must be something inherently fun about it.

Whether it's your rank, a competition for the most damage, a race to level 200, maybe being the first person to 30,000 fame, maybe you play because there's nothing better to do. When was the last time you had fun doing it?

If you can't remember or it was a long time ago, is Nexon at fault and if so, what are they doing incorrectly that prevents you from having fun in your own way?

I'm curious and would like to gain some insight into something that is a common bond between all players.

I would prefer to stay away from arguments such as "the reason why Nexon this" and "Nexon does that because" - I just want to hear raw opinions. I suspect it won't stay clear of argument for long, but I'm hoping we can try. It might be helpful in more ways than you think.

Example:

Personally, I enjoy the game itself, but I see the community issues (hacking, KSing) as the biggest problems in global. GM presence is closely related, but I'll just focus on this.

Nexon is always dreadfully slow to respond to most major hacking outbreaks and they usually never respond to community issues such as those who dupe items or do nothing but harass other people to get their jollies. I speak mostly in reference to KSing and numerous people that have a reputation for just making the game a generally worse environment.

If they do respond, it's always lackluster compared to the problem in the first place - case in point, their "compensation" for guilds that got guild hacked was 10mil - regardless of the actual size of the guild (that guild could've cost someone 100mil and they could've EASILY checked this, but they said no, you're getting 10mil).

These community issues make it incredibly difficult for me to enjoy the game and as such, I haven't had fun on global in a long time.

EDIT: Not worded terribly well, trying to fix it, but I'm tired.

When i was Glitch PQing and a GM come near me saying:

'You are using your internet to hack'

And blah blah blah :D

Then,he left and we came back to Glitch PQ :D!

Also,the funniest thing ever,was the 4x exp event (24h /4 days) =D!

That was EPIC :D

I still do have fun playin MS. I'm one of the few people who actually does find training enjoyable. Especially on my shadower omggg. Chaining together BOT, SB, assaulter, assassinate, and boomerang step is sweeeeeeeet. Wait for my 13x video guys  It'll show some serious shadower ownage and control.

I had fun about ten minutes ago, when I finished soloing Pap.

But to give a more insightful answer, I don't really allow most of what you've said bother me when I play. The guild hackings and the compensation for it was bullshit, and greatly influenced the disbanding of the guild I had been a part of. Hacking is nowhere near as common as it was in '07, but there will eventually be yet another major outbreak (Shit, remember those two or three weeks with PG hackers?), and Nexon will once again be slow to take action. I still don't allow this to make me 'not enjoy' the game. Sure, it pisses me off, but there's other things I can do... 50% of the people who play this game only come online to talk to the friends that they have met and made through this game; I could do that all day.

Training and leveling is nowhere near as fun as it was back in the day. I can easily say that I enjoyed my lower levels on my first character more than I do today on my Shadower, but since then I've grown much more competitive, as I have found that finding competition in things like damage and level actually makes the game more enjoyable for me. Because who doesn't like competition?
It's the people that dupe their items and hack their levels that take the fun out of that competition, and turn it in to something that people hate on.

If I didn't have fun playing MapleStory, I wouldn't log in. So I guess last time I had fun was when I was just chatting with friends last night and doing some quests with them. I also actually enjoy grinding...so guess that helps. :P

GPQs are fun.

So is random exploring.

Sometimes quests are too.

Anyways, it seems like CBs are a fun class. I'm not even at the CB level, and I enjoy training, unless I'm hungry. I never had fun grinding on a DK/page/hunter, but oh my god bandits are fun! Except when you die in LMPQ because Tauros 2-3HKO you. =\

And let's not forget, I love doing anything with my guild. Chatting, GPQing, taking on the bishes who stole our FM, all of it.

I had fun last night with a guildmate in Ludi. Not Will. Seriously. Not Will.

At level 73 and messing around with Squids, Gobies, Vikings, GK, Wyverns, WS, Himes, the works.

Freezing allows you to do anything.

I find grinding dull and a waste of time though... which is why I've decided to quit my own char and share my friend's instead. I feel a lil bad about leeching off his time spent leveling though, so I help train him once in a while.

Cpq was really fun when i was just learning the strategy of it, but it stopped when i realized it was about as deep as the "Hole to china" i dug as a kid.

I really enjoy playing my hunter, because I use multiple skills pretty much for the first time since i started playing maple.

Yesterday. I wouldn't be playing if I wasn't having fun. Whenever hackers begin to dominate any aspects of Maple Story that I enjoy, I usually leave for awhile.

I still kind of have fun. For example, yesterday I was questing and puppet was very fun to use on the ludi clocktower monsters.

However, it's not the same anymore because most of my friends have quit, especially one who basically was the "soul" of my old guild. She got everyone to talk and do stuff as a guild. Another factor was that my brother quit, but I was still able to have a lot of fun before my guild collapsed because we did GQs, HPQs, KPQs, CPQs together and chat. I didn't mind grinding since there will often be purple text entertaining me.

Personally, the competition and getting better equips are tedious for me, since they are expensive and I don't want to spend my time just trying to make money merchanting.

That's basically it.

I think I had the most fun pre-3rd job, where Henesys was even closer to my training spots, and how the equipments at the level range led to the inspiration for my signature about 3 years later. (Old Wisconsin and Whitebottoms FTW!)

That was also the time where people thought that landing a 10% scroll made an item godly. Also, I would say that I got a kick back in 2006 and 2007 for catching hackers. (Yes, it was an obsession for me at the time.)

I had the most fun pre-3rd job/CS when I used to hang around in the gollem pit near Henesys just chatting and going on spontaneous J. Rog runs. ;-;
...also when Mardia was released because of all of the awesome people I met then. D:
I think it's the grind that kills it for me
I could never get to 3rd job - not even on pservers. lolol:(

I actually had fun yesterday.

I was in NLC, killed roughly 10 Headless Horsemen with friends, went all the way to Ludi to pap, just to have friends have to go and whatnot, then went duals (found steelies in 5 minutes), vikings, gatekeepers, thanthos and grims. Then I went Aqua and killed gobies, squids, sharks, etc. Then I went back to Vic and camped zmmx2 and mmx1 before going back to NLC, finding no HH or Wolf Spider maps, so I went back to Aqua to hunt sharks with a friend (SE 20 plox... no luck). Then I went to Nath and spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to get a lycan to spawn 5 werewolves (lol).

Sorry, I should've separated that into paragraphs. Point is I had fun! lololo

xD Lots of bosses. Bossing is really fun, which is why I took my friend bossing. I had fun today LMPQing. We had a hilarious party, really good, and really lucky! (We got 15k EXP from LMPQ five times in a row.)

Hmm. In KMS doing CPQ two days ago was fun. When Ariant came out in GMS, that was fun too. The monsters may have been weak for me however it was still a very entertaining quest chain. More so than leafre was...

Crimsonwood should be the most fun I've had in a long time, provided the jump quest isn't a total bitch. xD

sitting at your chair and just chatting. its not "fun" but its entertaining. you dont see many people rofl'ing while they're on pure isolation grinding mode, now do you?

that and i find bossing fun. with 4th job, everything falls dead like snails. i like pap; its one of the "strong" bosses that doesnt need an organized party to kill. i usually solo pap. zak is okay but as an archmage, the only thing that makes zak challenging is watching out for 1/1+summon bumping. basically zak as an archmage is boring.

When I soloed Black Crow.
I'm trying to solo all the (soloable) bosses.
However, today, I had a great disappointment.
While trying to solo Anego, xxdaxxni, a ice mage came. He nearly killed me.
He barely spoke english and was quite annoying.
I partied him anyways, though, because I needed his MW and I knew that if not, then I'd run out of time (cuz I started very late).

So then, we're killing it, and after about 2.5 hours, I was forced to afk because my mother came home.

When I came back, my exp bar went 5%, and I saw the mage lag as he left the map. I asked him drops and he said magicodar and scroll.

Then I asked him for a bit of pot money and he fled. It's people like this that make the game unenjoyable.

I'm currently having fun on my LUKless bandit. Training isn't too bad (I prefer the ~33% and hour compared to the 12% an hour my WK gets) but I'm not liking the monster carnival with it. I find stable damage to be more fun than high damage on a non-warrior class.

Also, I was left in the dark and when ever I ask someone to explain, they always say they'll tell me later but never do. What was the guild hack? I was in a guild that was affected by it but was off that character for a while and no one told me what it was. :f7:

Back in the old days, now everything is "I'm stronger! moneymoneymoneymoney"

That's probably why I don't level anylonger. Waste of time, why bother playing a game with no fun, earning USELESS levels? Sure, seeing the flashy moves is nice and all, but really, what does it accomplish? I'd rather have fun then spend my time doing something useless.

Which is why I get ticked off when people say I am unable to level because I suck? No, it's just because I see no point in it, I've already achieved the final job advancement, I'm happy with that. I can level just as fast as anyone else, if I WANTED too.

MapleStory isn't fun anymore.

maple has its "fun" times every so often (2-3 times per week) I enjoy getting those last few wins in cpq to lvl 50 and the last 10% to lvl at hoodoos and just doing those "easy" noob quests on my priest

only problem is that lvling has slowed too much for me to get to the fun parts, everything costs way too much (big hopes for mass deflations with CW), and only quests i have left are long go here or collect 900 mateon tentacles/too high lvl quests for a solo priest

When I was APQing with friends, we only had to get one random person and that ended up being a guild member of someone in the party already. It was nice and relaxed, and we could talk. Just hanging out with friends is fun for me, I don't necessarily have to train.

Wowwww its even more fun than CPQ lol. I wish bowmen weren't so weak for 1st job cause its kind of hard to win :f3:.

Also, I browsed khaini's FM for a little bit last night too. Everything there is cheaper than scania, except the skill books which are alot more expensive. I can't wait until my server xfer to khaini is finished =D. Marketting khaini is gonna be sweeeeeeet. Cheap stuff XD

I used to be "hooked" to maple story many many hours a day, but since about the time leafre as released the game just got SUPER boring to me, i stopped training, weck i rarely play the game anymore.

I really only play for big periods of time now when there is new content, thats the only thingh that keeps me in the game , exploring new places, doing new quests.

I started playing this game because i love the game style, 2d pixel looking, and also because im an old-scholl gamer, i dont know if it was because of being a maple story newb back then but the game seemed so much fun in the beggining right now the in-game communitty is way to serious and un-fun , the game to me just lost all its charm, its sad because i really like the game its just that the population/society of the game makes the gameplay really un-fun/boring with all the rules made by big groups, scammers, hackers, underaged kids being complete jerks, power strougles and drama between players/guilds , there is so many negative thinghs right now :f4:

All this being said, im really excited about Masteria, its a 100% new place, that NO ONE outside Nexon as seen and im expecting great thinghs from them i really hope they are up to the task with this, next patch was set the players expectations very high myself included, maybe they can get me and some other older/bored players into the game again.

I'd have to say that MapleStory had always been boring for me game-wise, the only reason I was staying would have been my guild and friends. I hated training and couldn't grind for longer than thirty minutes. Why should I play a game that I don't enjoy playing? Well, since private servers were out it seemed even more foolish to keep playing. I'm a retired level 87 I/L Mage, and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. Of course, it's always nice to see new stuff, which keeps me constantly active on those forums.
But it's over with this game for me, as far as I care.
My life is much happier now, I can find new stuff to do... It's exciting. More time to meet with friends, get in shape, perhaps even play some other games... The one thing Maple has taught me is to not get addicted to anything. And also, always use Magic Guard after Papulatus dispels you (had to get the tough lesson for that one). ;)

The last time I've had some really good fun was probably around Level 70.
I'm a Beginner and it was alright maybe up 'til Level 75, but after that it was a little pointless.
I was doing the same things day in and day out.
I did enjoy it though, but I was limited.
Right now I somehow mananged to Level 81, but I'd seriously have to just leech if I want to keep my progress up.

Hm, interesting responses.

I was under the impression that dissatisfaction with Nexon's performance (causing lack of fun) in general was more widespread, but it seems from this result set that such is not the case. Whether or not that applies to the majority of the populace, I'm not sure.

Hm, probably one of the best/though provoking maplestory-related (haaa) topics I've seen in a while. My mapling experience has always been very inclusive & it's probably been more "fun" that way, just because I rarely deal with the idiots/hackers/nexon stupidities. There's only been a few incidents of massive hacking breakouts that have managed to turn me away from MS, most recently the PG guard hacks and even before that the widespread hacking at vikings during wizet's stint, but I actually found that tolerable. Some of my favorite mapling experiences have been very friend-centric--I actually found training fun with 6-person viking & (when they came out) squid parties. Just waiting in anticipation of new "high level" material, ie...getting zakum & aqua dungeon, waiting for 4th job/leafre, horntail, etc was also enjoyable, in retrospect.

Sometimes I've played MS way too much, and other times way too little...but I've never regretted the experience. <3

The last time I had fun in this game was earlier today when I was killing headless horseman with an f/p archmage friend of mine. It wasn't about her class/level (although archmages are definetely fun to party with), but just doing something new together with a friend.

I remember in the old days most of my friends were guildies and I only had a few people on my buddy list. Seeing people say "I'd quit if my friends quit" always looked odd to me, since you can always make new friends. I'm not saying friends are a commodity, but if you enjoy a game because you've made good friends in it, you can make more friends with time if some of yours decide to quit. If suddenly my entire buddy list and guild stopped playing, I'd definetely be distressed, but I don't think I'd quit. I know there are lots of great people out there just waiting to be met. :glitter:

A game that takes as long as Maple does, (1-200 takes a long time,) must offer things other than grinding to be fun. There is the social aspect, as you can sit in Free Market with a friend, not playing yet playing for hours. You can merchant, which is similar to grinding, you can do activities with guild.

The problem with the game, though, is that it's inherently time consuming. ExtremeBeast told me that 1-170 is only 12% of the experience needed from 170-200. Playing a video game for 60 hours total and maybe replaying it for another 60 several months later is NOT the same as devoting 6-8 hours (or more,) to the same game for months or even years. A lot of the pros I know are either borderline addicted or outright addicted. This can be destructive to one's health and social existence. My own gear is currently worth 1.8 billion mesos, but I really really don't want to log on to see the high damage numbers. 6-8 hours per day is a lot of time, and I can spend that time being with rl people, helping my parents, or doing work, (either for money or towards my manuscript.)

I don't think Maple has enough activities other than grinding. Sure there's a community, but most people would agree that over half the Maplers are idiots/scammers/jerks. Minigames are fun for about an hour or so, but eventually they get pretty boring (only 2 in GMS? Not enough). Quests are fun sometimes, but not everyone is a quest fanatic. Chatting is probably the most fun thing to do other than grind, which is why quite a few of people only play to talk with their friends.

When I was Lmpqing on my F/P:f2:
It was fun because we kept guessing and going in circles
I think Maple needs more activities like mining, mini-games and increase the exp rates or drop the exp needed to level.
This would make Maple more fun, IMO.
