I was joking around about Mario RPG and how Sonic hadn't delved into that area when my friend says that there's a Sonic RPG in the works for the DS. Sure enough, that's the case. Wow, i never would have guessed this would happen.

Here's hoping it's as good as Mario RPG? XD

I remember hearing about this a long time ago, the battles look weird from that screenie. Prolly will try it out though.

I can't wait to see Amy, Rouge and Knuckles moves ;o

Lol, I already have this pre-ordered for the bonus.

Kinda old, but I heard it's being developed by a decent company.

From all the early reviews i've read, it's set to be a good game. The official nintendo magazine here in the UK gave it 90% on the beta report.

This could be a good game, but the very nature of RPGs is at odds with Sonic's original basic function. Go play Sonic on the Genesis and tell me you think that game makes you think "hey, this should be a RPG!"

They've also got a Sonic game coming sometime in the future with apparent heavy sword-based gameplay. It's called Sonic and the Black Knight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_and_the_Black_Knight).

And their Sonic Unleashed, despite going back to the "omfg go fastttttttttttt" method that worked on the Genesis, is also apparently half based around bullshit werewolf-transformed Sonic that is NOTHING like the classic Sonic games of the Genesis era.

Although I will try the whole Sonic with the sword thing most likely (I like swords and Sonic is my favorite game character), I really think what is happening to Sonic is ridiculous. All the new games seem to suck, the last one that was well scored that I can remember was SA2 (If memory serves correctly). I know 100% how Sonic Team could get an amazing Sonic game. OK, they take Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and just make it puffier. Sonic 2 was one of Sonic's best games and all they would have to do is remake it for the modern generation and boom, amazing game sales.

You know how Capcom is doing Street Fighter II Turbo HD?

Wow, man, this is really getting out there. But Swords and Wiimotes has to be fun. Their ideas lately really are O_o

Thank you Afrobean, that is what I want to see happen. Now that I know that at least some people out there are working (despite not being Sonic Team members) I can rest easy.

I think the problem with Sonic IS the fast pace.
With Mario going 3-D was not as hard since Mario focuses on Jump length and exploration as a 2-D Platformer- it did pretty well for 3-D.
..
But with Sonic- The 2-D was about SPEED and seeing ahead on your screen and modifying your one jump to time it.
I mean Sure I can move fast in 3-D but whatelse?
Sonic really just needs something more to make it better than a Gunless FPS.
...
And SO FAR in MY opinion he has yet to do anything decent since 3-D.
Mario 64 And Mario Galaxies are just brilliant though. (I like Sunshine too- Just not for the Mario aspect)
....
As for a Sonic RPG- if it wants to rival Mario RPG (which I doubt) it will have to bring some cool stuff to teh RPG table - Timed attacks+++

Um...

Sonic's handheld games are a lot better. Especially the 2.5D ones. That's why they're going with something semi-2.5D for the next one. I just wish they'd bite the bullet and go FULL 2.5D with NO 3D at all. Just imagine playing one of the Genesis Sonic games, except with 3-D models instead of sprites. That would be amazing.

But that's not what they want. They want gimmicks. RPGs, swordplay, werewolf transformations. They figure out to drop the crazy cast of friends that were causing problems, then immediately jump on multiple other tracks toward failure.

If you are advocating the SLEW of SegaGame Gear ones- I'll choke you to death
If you are advocating the ones on Gameboy- You are totally right- and it would be awesome with 2.5D.
But too me that is Still PLAYING in 2-D which for Sonic I think is- so far- necessary.
...
I wonder if the handheld will incorporate a Trademark sonic move into Sonic RPG like Mario RPG did- (ultra jump anyone?)
...
I really feel that MegaMan 9 was one of the last great 2-Ds we will get for a long long while.

^The list of reasons I prefer DIMP's work to sonic teams. You'd almost think that Sonic team would have realised they were finally on the right track when they made Secret rings, and the huge amount of support it was getting right up to launch from most reviewers , because it was set to be more like a 2d sonic game than any 3d before it.

Then again they probably thought they would have refined the controls and camera (lolsonic team + fixing camera?) I guess thats what I was expecting for the secret rings sequal (worst bit is, for unleashed Sega looks like they've actually improved the camera, supposedly the controls, and would have been onto a winner , must have realised then shoved a gimick in there so that it doesn't do as well )

Regardless, the RPG is being made by bioware, so it should be pretty good.

"Super Mario -R-P-G-", is still in my head.

I hope this one will have timed attacks for me to master.

The fact Bioware is working on the storyline is the reason this will own.

And the fact Since SA1/2 I've been looking for a game that has a decent sonic storyline, all the rest of em have been plot fillers basicly.

Also Sonic pwn's :P

I kinda find it hard for a sonic RPG to work...

The Mario RPGs (Super, Paper, and M&L) worked beautifully since they mostly focused on witty humor and unique battle systems to instead of the usual dark fantasy tones and crappy time-based battle systems most RPGs have.

This RPG's not gonna have much humor, since the word DARK is plastered all over the title, so they can't use that method...And the battle system seems very linear from what I've seen in the videos. They're gonna need one badass storyline to back this up.

I guess it's an alright game. Really short though =/

The music didn't seem as up-to-par as I had hoped, although the intro music is pretty kick ass.

Anyways, I love the DS pens, and I can say it was a pretty decent game. Although this is comin' from a biased Sonic fan, so don't take my work into too much consideration.
