I`d like to know which horror/thriller movies are worth watching with friends. Some of the ones we`ve seen looked really interesting in the trailers, but ended up having a lame storyline or ending - aka it sucked. So I`d just like to know your opinions and stuff ;p
Maybe list your favorites and/or recommendations, in this format:
Movie title:
Release date (Month/Year):

Overall rating (out of 5):
I`ll go first.
Movie title: 1408
Release date (Month/Year): June 2007
Description: A writer spends a night in room 1408 of Dolphin Hotel and puts his life in danger. He has one hour to live, and has the option to use express check-out anytime he wants.
Comments: Nice suspense. I didn`t really like the ending.
Overall rating (out of 5): 4.5/5

Um, most of the Horrorfest movies. Mainly Dark Ride, Penny Dreadful, Unrest and The Hamiltons from 2006's Horrorfest. The Deaths of Ian Stone and Lake Dead we're pretty good from 2007. Also, I love the whole Saw franchise. It's funny, I just switched my Avatar and User Title an hour ago. =P
Descriptions:
Dark Ride
Ten years after he brutally murdered two girls, a killer escapes from a mental institution and returns to his turf, the theme park attraction called "Dark Ride".
The Hamiltons
A picture-perfect American family is always kind, loving and respectful to their neighbors… except that they usually wind up killing them.
Penny Dreadful
A young girl and her therapist take a road trip to help her overcome her phobia of riding in cars. This trip turns deadly as an escaped mental patient starts a new spree of killings.
Unrest
A med student collapses upon sensing a "presence" about her cadaver. Her fears are strengthened by the mysterious death of a friend. She must discover the connection before an angry spirit can wreak further vengeance.
The Deaths of Ian Stone
Starring Mike Vogel in the title role, along with Christina Cole, Jaime Murray, and Michael Dixon. The films revolves around Ian Stone who is in a constant cycle of dying at night only to wake up with a different life.[5]
Lake Dead
A group of teenagers inherit a motel on a lake, only to uncover a series of dark and frightening family secrets.
Everyone knows Saw. =P
Thank you Wikipedia for these wonderful descriptions. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horrorfest)

A horror movie that I like (almost positive it was suppose to be horror)
Movie title: Monster Man
Release date: N/A (I never learned what it was)
Description: Two guys are on their way to a friends wedding when they end up getting chased down by a guy with a pineappled up face in a monster truck.
Comments: Had it's "scarier" moments, very funny as well, very strange ending.
Overall rating (out of 5): 4/5 (I'd watch it again)

Movie title: Feast
Release date (Month/Year): 2005
Description: They're Hungry. You're Dinner.
Comments: I am not really into horror movies but I found this one to be quite scary. I had nightmares for a few days afterwards. It's very gore-y ( if that's even a real word )
Henry Rollins and Judah Friedlander are in it so it's pretty amusing in some parts.

1408 was really bad if you read the book. What the hell was up with the "monster" in the air ducts? That was just bad...the whole idea was to make people question if it was the room doing it or if it was just the guy slowly falling into madness.
Saw turned into an "mtv" horror series after part 1. Anything from Saw 2 and on was just horrible. 3 and 4 didn't even have a plot, it was just "lets see how many ways we can kill people". Sadly, unlike Final Destination (which wasnt that bad of a movie), it wasn't very well done.
You want a good "horror" movie?

When I read the description, it made it sound like it was just like all the other "in the woods in a cabin scary movie". Is it different then the newer ones like this?

Oh my god yes...if not for the fact of how campy it is, the sheer humor in it. They did it to try to be a serious movie of sorts with the first but it was so bad it was hilarious. They gave up by the second one and just tried to make it as "awesome" as they could, so to speak. That lead to Army of Darkness, which is just amazing. This right here is the reason Bruce Campbell is seen as a god in the eyes of many (and why Sam Raimi, the director, got to do much bigger movies, like the Spiderman movies).

The original or the remake?
I would figure that there are a few types of horror movies, ya got your situational(The Birds), your action(evil dead might be a part of this, although its partially a comedy) and your gore(saw, hostel).
Situational is one of the best(IMO), giving a rather sweet ending that leaves you fearful of the situation that is presented upon the characters. Some other examples of this would be The Myst(the ending was even accepted by King even though it wasn't written that way) and Sphere(bad example i know).
Action is somewhere around the middle, giving you a fair bit of blood with some gore and passing on what is a grim situation. 1408 would be a part of this, along with Event Horizon(though it is science fiction).
Gore is usually going for the violence, usually skipping the bigger scale. Saw(what may be the only movie series in recent history that could be related to a seasonal holiday) and Hostel go for this, but another example would be the hitcher remake.

The remake version, god it freaked me out just to watch it for a bit (yes I'm a wuss, you don't have to point it out...).
I really hate gore, it simply makes me wanna throw up.

I'm sorry but how the hell did this movie scare you? It was a comedy, the monsters humped for godsake. The guy who you thought was going to be the main character dies 30 seconds after they show him. This movie wasn't total crap but certainly not a scary movie whatsoever.

Either the original [Rec] (Quarantine) or the Saw series.
The saw series CAN be classified as horror, but it's also very psychological. He gives people choices, but those two choices lead to death no matter what. Whether it's being trapped to a rib ripping mechanism and the only way of escaping is dipping your hand into the jar full of acid to get the key.. or to being strapped by heavy chains from your ankles, back of the neck, elbows, back, and of course.. the JAW. You can either beat the clock and rip out all the chains, or just wait till your body is in 1 million different places.
I give this series a 5/5.

The Blair Witch Project is pretty good, imo. As long you watch it on a TV.
The idea of making it like a vlog, makes it more realistic, kinda.

Any home video with myself in it is quite scary if I do say so myself.....
I watched Feast again last night. I looooove that movie. Plus Dawn of the Dead and the rest in that series of movies.
28 days is good as well.

The thing now a days is that the old "horror" films were the best. Since they didn't have all hi-tech editing skills, they relied on imagination and appealing to the senses. Modern horror films might be scary, but in the end, are forgotten.

The Grudge got me scared of going to the uni toilets... because most of the time no one is in there. I ran out once because I heard something that sounded like croaking...... The Japanese originals were the best, the American versions just can't grasp the same feeling despite they had the original director plus the fact it was shot in Japan. Some how they just don't feel the same.
Who can forget the Ring? That got some people too scared to go near their TVs?

I'm pretty jaded when it comes to horror films because I've watched far too many. The typical slasher kind of horror is much more comedic to me than scary... I greatly prefer horror films with a creepy storyline/shocking twist/surprise moments, etc. "Shutter" has always kinda stuck with me as one of my favorites of all time. I really love the story, and there's something about cameras that freak me out. I'm talking about the original 2004 Thailand version. I don't even consider the crappy 2008 American remake.

Yeah... most recent Horror movies aren't really Horror. Things like Hostel and Saw aren't horror, they're just gory for the sake of being gory. They try to gross you out, not scare you. Most others just go for the "startle" type fo scares, not actual frightening scares.
Anyway, while this may be a bit biased because I saw these at a much more impressionable age, I have to mention that nothing recent is even in the same leagues as...
Movie title: Pet Cemetery
Release date: 1989
Description: Based on a Stephen King story. After moving into their new home the Creed family's cat is killed after wondering onto the highway. Jud an elderly neighbor shows Louis, the father, to an isolated hill behind the local Pet Cemetery and instructs him to bury the deceased feline there. Not long after the cat reappears at the Creed home, only he is not the same. The docile cat is now vicious and destructive. When their youngest son meets with a fatal accident, the distraught Louis buries him in the same location hoping to revive him.
Movie title: Poltergeist
Release date: 1982
Description: A suburban family living in a small town in California who's home is abruptly invaded by supernatural forces who are anything but friendly, and proceed to terrorize the entire clan. This is a movie that plays like a roller-coaster ride, and once it gets going it never stops.
Movie title: The Birds (or almost any Hitchcock movie, really)
Release date: 1963
Description: A wealthy San Francisco playgirl pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people there in increasing numbers and with increasing viciousness.
Also, this last one isn't that scary but it scared the crap out of me because I saw it when I was 7 AND I had a My Buddy (http://cakeplow.com/uploaded_images/mybuddy.jpg). The evil in this movie was Chucky (http://www.reelcollectibles.co.nz/images/chucky/12_chucky.jpg). I then threw it out and my mom found it and thought "This toy is still perfectly good" and put it back on my bed. Freaked me the pineapple out when I got back to my room and it was waiting for me.
Movie title: Child's Play
Release date: 1988
Description: Kid gets a ~2 foot high doll as a gift, except it's possessed by the soul of a serial killer that was recently put to death.
I also feel that this is a good thread to link this puzzle (http://us.mms.com/us/dark/dark_game.jsp) about "dark movies"... I got all of them without cheating, although it took me several hours.
