Yea, it popped up on my desktop a while ago, and makes the entire thing look ugly. :[
Anyone know what it's for and how I can have it not show? D:

Desktop.ini is a file that stores information about customized folders. I customize my folders all the time to make things look 'beautiful' and the Desktop.ini file will show up since it holds all that information. Funny that you think it's 'ugly'.

Hiding it is easy. Just right click on 'desktop.ini', select the 'Properties' button, and set it as 'hidden'. Then open up your Control Panel, find the 'Folder Options' button, select the 'View' tab, and check the box that says something like "Do not show hidden files/folders".

Done.

Yay, thanks for that. <3
I'm kind of weird about things like that. My desktop needs to be just this certain way or it bugs me. xP

Just curious, but what kind of information does it store, exactly? o_o
Like, if I deleted it, would I be screwed, or just loose some stuff?

Desktop.ini is used to tell Windows how to display a folder. For example, enabling Thumbnail view creates a desktop.ini file in that folder which amongst other things, tells Windows to add an extra item to the View menu for that folder. Desktop.ini files are also used when you customize folders, change their icons etc.

Removing that file would most likely make all the maps and folders that you customized disappear at said directory, such as shortcuts, I would assume(maybe wallpapers too, but I'm not sure of that..)

So pretty much anything on my desktop that isn't there by default?

Yeah, pretty much. I doubt you'll mess up your computer, though it might just make everything look ugly. I'll give you an example of what desktop.ini does. I use a program where I can skin my own folders. As you can tell by my name, I really like bacon. So, I have little slices of bacon pictures in place of the old folder icons. After this customization, desktop.ini appears. I just set it as hidden and forget all about it.

It's not worth deleting really. Just set it as hidden and don't think about it too much.

Ah. I just put it in hidden. xP
Was just curious what it was for.
