View Full Version : Quantity or quality?

Quality isn't the word I was really looking for, but that's how the phrase goes.

Anyways! I was having a conversation with a person I've known for quite some time. He's watched anime for a very long time. His series count is through the roof, I probably know a merely half of the anime he's watched, and only watched a quarter of them.

So earlier we got into a argument on what the real anime noob is; Someone who is into anime just for the view count and has knowledge of all the anime you've watched, or someone who selects anime according to what they like (comedy, romance, MOE<3, etc.) and still knows a lot about anime in general.

So which one is more of a noob.. Person who believes in quality, or person who believes in their own personal taste, even if you've only watched a decent amount of anime?

Usually the answer is one or the other but imo this case ends up being a mix of both is the best.

I stick to what i like and ditch what i don't, but at the same time know of more anime than anyone i know in real life (anyone here doesn't count because it's always obvious to me that i'm an anime noob here :[ ), lol.

What the hell is that supposed to mean? Are there actually people who watch anime just to make their count of anime seen higher? <_<

Overall, I'd say that someone who is "new" to anime, would be someone who hasn't seen a diverse variety of some of the better examples of each genre / sub genre. I don't think there's really any use of labeling someone a noob at anime anyways.

They are those people that do that, and then there are some that flaunt their view count as well.

That I know at least.

This. The real anime noob is the guy who thinks someone else is an anime noob. Regarding "view count" - I wouldn't say it's why I watch anime, but being able to add an anime to myanimelist and give it an accurate vote motivates to finish a bad anime.

The anime expert is the one who knows what he is watching and can explain it to others. The anime noob is the one who watches something and just says "AWSUM!!1~`."

In the anime blogging world, there are a crapload of aspiring anibloggers who just churn out episodic reviews in the stereotypical format of:

A bunch of screencaps
A summary
A short "thoughts" or "reactions" section

Anybody can do that. I could do it in my sleep. All you need is half a brain and a way of getting screenshots.

The more masterful anime bloggers write episodic posts with an argument and lots of personality, not just a brainless reiteration of what the episode was.

EDIT: I have 128 completed series under my belt (with 50 dropped ones, some of them at the 90% mark), which is a decent amount. Yet I know some anime "noobs" who've watched upwards of 500 series and still can't successfully explain why a series was good. Or remember it for that matter.

EDIT #2: Though of course, there's a minimum to how much anime you NEED to have watched before you can think of considering yourself an anime expert. There's no way you can be an expert if all you've watched is Haruhi and FMA, no matter how good you think your tastes are.

AWSUM!!~~

No but really, totally agree. I tried having him explain some that I never heard of before and he couldn't give me a thought out explanation. His only excuse for some were "I'd have to watch it again."

According to MAL, I've watched 149 titles, though only 87 of them were actual TV series apparently. There's still plenty more I want to watch though, and I don't think I'm anywhere near a connoisseur of anime as most people on the intarwebz.

The person who believes in "quantity" is an idiot. We shouldn't have to explain why.

I watch anime because I enjoy it.

And because most American shows suck but that is a different topic.

Yes. I think so. Also, ask him what his favourite anime is. Just to be sure if you have to do it more than once.

His favorite anime is Code Gayass, he told me that a week ago. Oh and he said runner up was Soul Eater...

Yeah..

That's not too bad I guess. Ask him why he likes it and why he thinks it's good.
