View Full Version : Anime you dislike, yet everyone else seems to enjoy?

As the title says, what's an anime that you didn't quite fancy yet everyone else seemed to go gaga for? And I mean it has to be ones that you thought you were painful to watch, so try to watch out for over rated/hyped animes that you still liked in the end. Otherwise, I'd list Lucky Star, Clannad, Geass, Bleach, Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, ef - a tale of memories, maybe Evangelion, maybe the second half of Full Metal Alchemist, and others here.
Let's see, let's see, what shall I put here....
Elfen Lied - I'll admit, I thought it was interesting the first time I saw it. A few years have passed since then and after re-watching a majority of it to remember what it was about beyond "Cool, there's gore!", I hated it.
Strawberry Panic! - At least everyone else I've seen that's watched it seemed to love it at any rate. *sigh*
Loveless - Again, all of my friends that have seen it liked it.
Air - Only watched further for Potato.
Kanon - Only watched for Yukarin's character and oddly enough, her arc was the only one I kind of liked. So, yes, I dislike Ayu, Makoto, Shiori, and the other girls.
True Tears - Maybe I just can't connect with these kinds of romance drama stories.
Potemayo
Claymore - Teresa's arc was the only good thing.
Gantz
Inu Yasha - Maybe the dub ruined it.
Kanokon - I think most people that watched it liked it at any rate. Wasn't a guilty pleasure and I cried when Shindou Naomi was Chizuru's mother.
Excel Saga
Naruto - First arc was fine and then it got.... lengthy and boring.
PaniPoni Dash - A lot of it was actually painful for me to watch. The rabbit was the only thing that kept me watching, despite having not a lot of screentime.
DNAngel - One of the twins won a j-saimoe, so it has to have been popular, right?
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Yes, I said it. I honestly didn't like TTGL and if people didn't tell me to keep watching, I would have dropped it at around episode five.
[Insert popular harem animes here, even School Days] - I really cannot stand harem animes, ugh.
Edit:
Screw you lot and all this typical Bleach and Naruto hating.
Watch more anime. Or something. Fcuk, time for a sequel.

Only one I can really say is School Rumble. Felt too dragged out, and overused too much of the same joke over and over again. (Coming from someone who watches One Piece (350+ episodes))
Gantz... I dunno if everyone else enjoys it. I just cant stand it - it makes me sick watching it.

Elfen Lied. I will never understand why anybody thought it was such an amazing anime. The manga was sub-par as well. There was nothing remotely enjoyable about the gore or nudity in it.
Yes, not even the nudity.
Elfen Lied was a good anime to watch, but the ending was horrible.

I thought the same with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. I kept watching until the time skip, but then I couldn't stand it anymore.
I belive this has more to do with taste of anime. Some people feel the anime isn't what they enjoy, and some people actually like it.
I love drama / slice of life type anime, and as a result, I generally enjoy all anime like Clannad, Air, etc.
Also, I didn't like Bleach, Naruto, or Geass. I've tried watching many of them, but they just didn't appeal to me.
Elfen Lied was a good anime to watch, but the ending was horrible. I watched in my 'i wanna kill the world' stage of my life so i found it quite enjoyable. I was like ' AWESOME!'
I hate OnePiece

It could be, like how I hate harem animes, but I feel odd about some of the ones I dislike.
I don't mind mecha, but I didn't like TTGL, which apparently grabbed some attention from people that didn't like mecha. If you think I disliked it for the ZOMG GAR or whatever it was with the shouting, I liked Busou Renkin.
I don't care much for violence and actually enjoy it sometimes, but I didn't like Elfen Lied. Nudity didn't ruin it, either.
I like comedies, lolis, and school girls, but I didn't like PaniPoni Dash, yet I loved Hayate no Gotoku. The weirdest thing of all is that I watched the show for the rabbit and I typically hate rabbits.
Friends kept talking about Excel Saga. I love random comedies, but this was one of the very few series I've actually dropped.
Going with school girls and my love of yuri, I hated Strawberry Panic, but adored MariMite. Maybe I just like implied yuri in my animes....
Comedies are usually hate or love anyway, so what can you do.
It is kind of unfair for me to dislike a majority of romance/drama I've seen when I don't seem to really connect with the whole romance thing, although I did like Nana and thought ef was okay. I'm apparently heartless when there are no lolis around because I haven't cried watching any anime.
HEY SEAN! ICHIGO. OLOLOLOLOL.

Bleach, Naruto, Lucky Star. <_<
I hate things that never end. The average good anime may be 13~26 ep's long. The longest anime that i've watched that wasn't bad was Monster.
I don't necesarily enjoy harems either. They are all the same, usually.

Bleach almost makes it to decent (fights are nifty), can't stand the latter two. Aside from those, though, I like basically any anime I watch. Probably the only genres I haven't seen are hentai and BL, lol.

Naruto, Bleach, and Death Note; I've never been a huge fan of Shonen Jump =/.
Also I saw the Bleach dub on Adult Swim and my ears were bleeding after the first 57 seconds.
I hate about 99.9% of all Harem animes. I don't see how anyone can like these (Except School Days...if you want to call that a Harem anime). I hate super srs bsniz animes (Fuck you, Gundam 00). But none of those compare to my hate for Lucky Star. I hate this anime with a fucking bloody passion. Words cannot describe this kind of hate! I watched the first 10 minutes of the first episode, and honestly, I'd rather drink acid and tear off my balls.

Kind of saddens me I'm mostly seeing hate toward the really "mainstream" animes, ie - most shounens apparently, and not anything else, like someone disliking NHK ni Youkoso! or ARIA.
I should have seen it coming, though.

School Days is definitely a harem anime. It's just different from your typical harem anime, which is probably why I think you seem to like it. Makoto wasn't Mister Oblivious Nice Guy and the ending was probably what really set it apart from other animes in its genre.
Lucky Star picks up at around episode five. I think everyone that says it's shit drops it before then and I can completely understand why. It really doesn't deserve as much attention as it's getting but it has a) Hirano Aya as one of the main characters and b) KyoAni. *sigh*

Well, while Lucky Star definitely isn't for everyone. (How many people actually enjoyed the first 4 episodes?) Like Jean (^) sed, it picks up at ep 5, because the director doing it until then was actually fired because of "performance issues (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-04-30/lucky-star-changes-director-after-four-episodes)" (Basically, it was telling him - "You suck as a director")

For me, Gundam SEED. Damn, its animation sucks hardcore. Well, that, and most of those ultra popular kiddy anime like Naruto, Bleach, and Inuyasha that kids find very srs bsns.
Then there's Code Geass R2. I mean, I do watch it and enjoy it, but it's so much more cheaply planned out than the previous season, it's pretty lame and doesn't deserve all the credit it's getting. :x
Naruto, DBZ, Bleach, One Piece, Inuyasha, anything with more than 52 episodes. Haruhi Suzumiya is incredibly hyped but I thought it was merely ok. I didn't care much for Spirited Away. FF VII Advent Children is awful. I think that's all...

Oh with the post, anime I tend to dislike?
Well I have a very strong distaste with VERY short anime (less that 50 episodes) coz they end so quick =( with the exception of a few anime in which I enjoy the main storyline. Also I hate science fiction anime >.< like TTGL, Martian Successor Nadesico, Zoids, s-CRY-ed with the exception being Trigun coz it has some comic relief that I find amusing =P.
Overall I enjoy adventure, fantasy and action anime.
EDIT: Is it me? or does everyone here HATE long anime/manga and love short anime with less than 50 episodes O_O? Coz I LOVE long anime/manga coz I can waste more time on it hee hee hee =P

Oh with the post, anime I tend to dislike?
I consider "anime you dislike, yet most people seem to like" to be different than "anime you dislike". I know a lot of people that have disliked Kanokon, Rosario to Vampire, Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan, and Moetan, so it's one of those "since the majority of people dislike it, it shouldn't be included here" sort of things.
Saying "anime you tend to dislike" is basically saying which genres you dislike. Not what I'm asking for, but it doesn't hurt to hear.
I'm aiming to see people listing shows like Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, AIR, Azumanga Daioh, Minami-ke, TTGL, and Elfen Lied, since a lot of people liked them and I find it interesting to see people who don't get swept in by the crowds. Or something. I'm just a little sad about this because I'm seeing a lot of the more popular shows and not any of the lesser known shows like ARIA, Sketchbook ~full color's~, Kamichu!, Hidamari Sketch, oshtimlisteningsliceoflifeuhm, Busou Renkin, Sumomomomomomomomomomomo, y'know? Man, I think Seto no Hanayome and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei aren't widely known, either....
ANYWAY, am I making any sense? I'm a little fuzzy today. And acev is somewhat right in how the genre of the show does play a part. Comedy is just thee biggest iffy, at least in my mind.
And to answer your other question, it really depends on the show for me. I loved Cardcaptor Sakura enough that I'm willing to re-watch it in its entirety in Japanese, but I can't say I'd say the same for something like Futari wa Purikyua, which should say something because I'm a fan of mahou shoujo. Maybe because Tamura Yukari wasn't in it, but then again, Yukana was and Tanaka Rie came in the second season....
But yeah, I'm just not interested in watching on-going things like Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece when there are other shows I can watch that actually have an ending I can complain about.
Not even during Grave of the Fireflies...
you Heattless BITCH!(not really)

To your merit some people say Grave of the Fireflies could have been sadder if it had SOME happy moments in it.

I thought there were a few happy moments like when they left that lady's house to live in a shelter. The firefly scene in the shelter was cute, too.
What did it say again? I died on something something 1945? I think that pretty much ruined it for me. Everything clicked in my head from there, so there was no huge emotional impact for me since you pretty much know they're both going to die.
It's still a good film, despite me not being a fan of things from real wars. ;P

ChäoS;HEAd, not liking.
Akane-iro, why am I still watching it? orite, because Tanaka Rie is awesome, even if she's using that icky high pitched voice.
Didn't like the second half of Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu. It was cliche from the beginning and just kind of dragged on.
I'm unsure on how popular Kamen no Maid Guy is, but jokes about Naeka's breasts got boring after episode three and they carried it on 'til the very end.
Looking back on it, I didn't really like ef - a tale of memories, but the art and music was very well done. Debating on whether or not I should watch the sequel.
SO, I'M GOING TO GO SIT IN MY CORNER AND GIGGLE AT GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES BECAUSE I HAVE NO HEART.

InuYasha - Lets Recap EVERY OTHER FRICKING EPISODE how InuYash was bound to a tree by Kikyo (I think that's right... can't remember for sure) and then set free by Kagome.

If something is popular, that means a lot of people like it, not everyone.
I myself am not a fan of Bleach nor Naruto, they just don't entertain me as much as anime like Clannad or Honey and Clover. The two things that annoy me about both Bleach and Naruto is the fact that they stop to talk for 10 episodes in mid combat and the crazy fansboys/girls.

You gotta be mature enough to understand NGE... someone my age said he couldn't understand it so therefore it sucks. NGE is like the legacy of anime for a reason.
And...
MEGUMI SAMA!!
*cough*
Animes I hate... are... Naruto and Bleach, both over hyped and both pointless to a degree that is excruciating to try and sit myself through... not to mention it totally totally made no sense. There is no visible theme, no messages. Other than those two, I would have to say DBZ and YGO. I used to watch those 2 when I was younger, when YGO began doing 5 episode a duel I stopped.
Then I have managed to go through CCS, Tsubasa Chronicle, School Rumble, Mai HiME/Otome, Death Note, NGE, Shaman King(liked the manga better), Hell Girl, and now half way through FMA. There are goods and bads about those animes, but I don't really dislike any of those animes. Naruto and Bleach is just too dragged out, and all they do is fight, fight, fight fight... end... o.O Pointless in my opnion, no?

I hate all mecha. I'm also.. a semi-manga purist. When I see everyone saying DBZ, it breaks my heart all over again that uhm.. Funimation(?) made it sooo horrible. The fight with Frieza? *bangs head repeatedly against wall*
Most fillers they come up with are horrible and/or stupid for any anime, just makes me want to not watch. True for Bleach, and InuYasha.
Making quick things take forever just to fill up the time slot is another huge bother.. utterly destroyed DBZ and makes Death Note anime seem stupid to me.

flcl - i'm not one for super randomness and a hard to follow story. then again, i watched the dubbed version.
welcome to nhk - was too slow paced for me. i couldnt bother to finish it. maybe ill try again later on.
melancholy of suzumiya haruhi - k. so she's weird and eccentric, and so the other characters are cute. i get the story. i get it all. it still wasnt that great.
Anime that I dislike but everyone seems to like?
DN Angel: I'm glad the manga-ka decided to pick up the manga again, but the anime was just horrible. I hated the animation at some points. Now that I look back on it, I don't understand why I didn't drop it in the first place. Maybe to satisfy the girly side of me. >_>
Gundam (except for the exceptional one or two series): In the year XXXX, Colony XXX... Need I say more?
Macross Frontier: Macross Frontier was the first time I watched a Macross series. I picked it up, it was ok, but I didn't feel like it was the greatest. Then I picked up the other Macross series and I understood why.
Vampire Knight: :( Just no. Some mangas should just stay as mangas. The fangirl population doesn't help it much either.
DeathNote:I dropped it at around episode 19 because that's when the story just died out for me. I read the manga and like the anime, it went downhill after a certain point.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann:Everyone bugged me to watch it, so I did. I watched about 2 episodes, and I didn't find any appeal in it.
And how could anyone hate Spirited Away? :( Or Totoro?

Naruto-I mean come on it's set in a world consisting OF MULTIPLE NINJUTSU ELEMENTS AND TECHNIQUES, but no, we have to watch people in the village of fire use the same ninjutsu OVER AND OVER without seeing stuff from the earth, sky, water,or that last region.
Bleach-Not that I hate this one, it just seems that the manga way way way outdid the anime, but there were lots of filler episodes and I never understood why Zangetsu was released when Ichigo took Rukia's sword, but whilst Rukia was using the sword it was ice-elemental.
Death Note-I don't know, this series could have been amazing, but the amount of 7-12 year olds watching this kind of ruined. It also is a little too complex, we are dealing with regular teenagers without "special attributes", yet Light has a "superior deducting logic process" compared to others. At that point I was like wtf. Seriously, this guy is a retarded kid who has no friends he definitely isn't superior to anyone. Also was a lil too emo I cut myself while writing people's deaths.

Elfen Lied - It was like...porn and gore, not much of a storyline.
FLCL - didn't understand it, I don't like overly random anime
.hack//SIGN - I dunno if anyone else watched this but this was the most boring piece of garbage i have ever seen.
Bleach - Should've just stopped it after they saved Rukia, both the anime and manga really really suck. I like Naruto though, expecially the newer episodes/chapters.
Lucky Star - lol, just no.
I don't really watch anime though. I've probably seen less than 20 series. I prefer my non-animated tv shows. The sig and avatar are misleading.
